Why people leave Gmail

  • Advertising. Gmail is paid for by advertising. Google says it doesn't read your messages to choose adverts, but it uses what it learns from the rest of your Google account.
  • Storage. The free 15 GB is shared with Google Drive and Google Photos, so it fills up faster than it looks.
  • Encryption. Personal Gmail accounts don't have end-to-end encryption, so Google can open your mail.

What you keep when you move

Your old mail, contacts and calendar can all come with you, and several providers on this list can copy them straight from Gmail. Your @gmail.com address stays with Google, so keep the account open and forward new mail for a few months. If you move to your own domain this time, you'll never need to change address again.

34 providers. Last checked 23 October 2026. How I score. Commission never changes a star or the order. More lists: Best email providers · Most secure email providers · Private email providers · Outlook alternatives · Email with UK or EU data storage · Email with your own domain · Cheapest email for your own domain · Free email providers · Business email providers · Email alias services · Self-hosted email software.
