Good to know

Do I have to delete my Google account?

No. You can leave Gmail dormant while keeping your overarching Google account active. Google Drive, Photos, YouTube and any Google Play purchases will carry on working exactly as normal.

Will I miss emails while I move?

Not if you enable automatic forwarding. Any new messages landing in Gmail will route directly to your new inbox while you transition. Just remember to check your Gmail spam folder every couple of weeks, as Google doesn't forward anything flagged as junk.

How long does it take?

Setting up takes an afternoon; notifying everyone takes a few months. Copying your messages and folders usually finishes within a few hours. Transitioning all your sign-ins takes longer, but keeping forwarding active for three to six months comfortably catches stragglers.
