The History of Email: From ARPANET to Today
Email began as a simple way for researchers to leave messages on networked computers. Decades later, it remains one of the few communication systems that works across companies, countries, and devices — and still underpins much of our digital life.
Email is so ordinary now that it is almost invisible. You open your inbox without thinking about the underlying system. Messages arrive from banks, friends, schools, governments, and businesses. Receipts, security codes, newsletters, and support replies all flow through the same channel.
Email began as a practical side effect rather than a commercial product. Researchers were attempting to make computers talk to each other on networks like ARPANET, and the ability for humans to leave messages along the way proved equally valuable. That shift from simple data exchange to human messaging quietly laid the foundation for modern digital communication.
From Machines to People
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, computers were large, expensive machines used primarily by universities and research labs. Early users could only leave text notes for others on the same physical computer.
The breakthrough occurred in 1971 when Ray Tomlinson sent the first network message between two separate computers. To route the message, he used the @ symbol to separate the user's name from the destination computer. That choice remains the core structure of every email address today.
Why Email Spread
As university and research networks expanded, email grew because it solved practical communication problems:
- It was faster than physical memos and cheaper than post.
- Asynchronous delivery meant senders and recipients did not need to be online at the same time.
- Messages could be read hours later without interrupting the recipient's current task.
This model made email ideal for coordination across different time zones, departments, and organisations. By the time personal computers and the public internet emerged in the 1990s, email was already a proven communication framework.
Webmail and the Internet Boom
During the 1990s, internet service providers began bundling personal accounts, while web-based services like Hotmail allowed people to check their messages from any browser. For many, creating an email address was their entry point to the internet.
An email address evolved into a core identity component, serving as a primary login, account recovery tool, and permanent point of contact. This era also established the divide between free, ad-supported services and paid email providers.
Filtering, Authentication, and Trust
As email usage scaled, so did abuse. Unsolicited marketing grew into mass spam, scams, and targeted phishing. Because email was designed to be open, providers had to build filtering systems to evaluate, score, and screen incoming messages.
To prevent domain spoofing and restore sender accountability, the industry adopted standardised authentication protocols:
- SPF (Sender Policy Framework): Verifies which IP addresses are authorized to send mail on behalf of a domain.
- DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail): Adds a cryptographic signature to prove a message was not altered in transit.
- DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance): Tells receiving servers how to handle messages that fail SPF or DKIM checks.
These security checks operate silently in the background to keep inboxes usable.
The Role of Email Alongside Messaging Apps
When real-time chat and collaboration tools appeared, they did not replace email. Instead, messaging apps took over fast, informal conversations, leaving email to handle communications that require structure, clarity, official records, and long-term accountability. Businesses, governments, and institutional systems rely on email because it produces an archive that can be referenced across different platforms.
Privacy and Ownership
As digital tracking increased, email usage came under closer scrutiny. Because losing access to an inbox can lock a user out of linked third-party services, data privacy and account ownership became essential considerations.
Many users now rely on privacy-focused services like Proton Mail for end-to-end encryption, while others use custom domains to keep their email addresses independent of any single provider.
An Infrastructure Built on Open Standards
Early internet platforms like GeoCities, Myspace, and legacy instant messengers disappeared or lost relevance over time. Email survived because it does not rely on a single central provider, proprietary software, or closed platform.
Email runs on open standards that allow completely different systems to communicate seamlessly. It has continuously adapted to web browsers, mobile devices, and modern encryption standards without breaking backwards compatibility. Email remains essential because it functions as open infrastructure—a shared, reliable standard for digital communication.
